Baked vs Fried Snacks: What to Check on the Label

“Baked” tells you how a snack is prepared. To compare two packets properly, you still need to read the rest of the label.

Start with a fair comparison

Check whether the nutrition figures refer to one serving, the whole pack or 100 g. Comparing different quantities can give a misleading impression. Use the same basis for both products, then look at the portion you expect to eat.

Read the ingredients

Baked snacks can contain oil, salt, sugar and seasoning. Fried snacks can also differ widely in their ingredients and preparation. The cooking method alone does not tell you everything about the product.

Check the details that matter to you

Look at the stated energy, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, protein and other nutrition values. Avoid relying on a large front-of-pack phrase while overlooking the table on the back. Choose based on your own needs and the product information.

Do not skip allergens

Flavourings may contain milk, peanuts, wheat or other allergens even when the base ingredient is makhana. Read both the ingredient list and the allergen statement on the exact variety you are buying.

Check the pack itself

Confirm the seal is intact, the pack is within its best-before date and the storage instructions are clear. After opening, reseal it and keep it away from moisture.
